Whether you like to play a sport or just watch, KU is likely to have a program that will interest you. In addition to the activities listed below, you can also enjoy the recreational opportunities provided by KU's beautiful, hilly campus: Potter Lake, Campus West and Wescoe Beach are among the favorite spots for sunning, reading the Kansan, or just relaxing between classes.

The Hawk's Nest area on Level 1 of the Kansas Union is a place of activity
and community for the campus of the University of Kansas. Students, faculty,
staff, and community members frequent the Hawks Nest to study, access wireless
internet, watch TV, or sit on the terrace. A performance area featuring a
stage, track lighting, and a limited house sound seats an audience of approximately
100 people.
Live performances, late night programming, and special events are featured
throughout the year. KU organizations interested in sponsoring an event in
the Hawk's Nest should contact the Kansas Union Events Services Office for
programming guidelines, sponsoring steps, and assistance to develop a successful
event.

The KU intercollegiate athletics department is a member of the NCAA and Big
12 Conference with competition in 18 sports. Representing KU in men’s
events are cross-country, track, football, basketball, baseball and golf.
Women’s teams include cross-country, basketball, track, soccer, volleyball,
softball, tennis, rowing, golf and swimming and diving. There are also opportunities
for students interested in being involved in sports medicine, serving as
team managers, media relations and marketing or representing KU as a member
of the spirit squad. Contact individual coaches or department offices in
the athletics department (see Services
& Resources section) regarding open tryouts. The ticket office has
information regarding ticket availability for all home Jayhawk events.

The Jaybowl, located on Level 1 of the Kansas Union has been a KU tradition
since 1953. Its twelve bowling lanes are the home to leagues, HSES Bowling
Classes, and the nationally ranked KU Intercollegiate Bowling Teams! Lanes
are available for open bowling in the afternoons, evenings and weekends.
Cosmic Bowling is free for students each Friday and Saturday night and features
black lights, disco lights and great music. The Jaybowl is available for
student parties and can be reserved for small and large groups.
Other activities include video games, DANCE DANCE Revolution and the Jaybowl
Engraving Service. The Jaybowl is open to the public and university community,
but students receive a discount on bowling when they show their KU I.D. The
Jaybowl is a smoke and alcohol free environment.
Ambler Student Recreation Fitness Center

The Ambler Student Recreation Fitness Center (ASRFC) opened
in September of 2003. This student-funded facility houses a 42’ rock
climbing wall, 17,000 sq. ft. of cardiovascular/resistance training equipment
(including weight machines and free weights), six multipurpose courts, racquetball/squash
courts, a dasher board system, a suspended walking/running track, aerobic
and martial arts studios, outdoor pursuits, outdoor equipment rental, a free
bike self-repair shop, locker rooms, and a 52” plasma TV in the lobby.
Adams Campus Outdoor Education Center
The challenge course will provide opportunities for organizations
and groups to work together and develop group unity. With the outside classroom
environment, hidden talents and skills will be uncovered. The low course
is designed with a number of problem solving active elements to create mental
challenges that emphasize team-building and group cohesion.
Outside the ASRFC are two lighted basketball courts. Parking is available at meters or in Lot 90 (yellow permit). For entrance to the ASRFC or to check out equipment you must show your KUID.
Fitness programs include KUFit classes, Fit4U fitness assessments and personal training. Several KUFit classes include Pilates, Yoga, Turbo Kick, and Zumba. Fit4U and individual personal training sessions are also available.
Informal Recreation opportunities include open recreation hours at the ASRFC and the Shenk Outdoor Complex. Open recreation at the ASRFC includes use of the basketball, badminton, volleyball, squash and racquetball facilities. Equipment checkout is available at the ASRFC Welcome Center. Outdoor equipment rental is available through Outdoor Pursuits.
Intramural Sports are offered all year and include team, individual/dual sports and tournaments. There are women’s, men’s and co-rec divisions. Sports include basketball, softball, soccer, ultimate frisbee, table tennis, racquetball, golf, flag football, wallyball and bench press.
Outdoor Pursuits is located on the first floor of the ASRFC and houses a 42’ rock climbing wall with a bouldered arch. Outdoor Pursuits serves as rental headquarters for hiking, canoeing and camping equipment. All are available to KU students, faculty and staff at very low rental prices. The rental checkout also offers a free, do-it-yourself bike repair shop.
Sport Clubs are student-led organizations that can be recreational, instructional or competitive. Each club has a student executive board that schedules practices and games and sets dues for its members. Each of the sport clubs offer opportunities to learn new sports, enhance your existing skills or compete and travel in your sport.
The Shenk Outdoor Complex, located at 23rd and Iowa Streets, is home to many intramural and sport club competitions and practices. Additional uses for the eight refurbished fields may be requested through KU Recreation Services. The fields are open late March to mid November and ample parking is available.
Robinson Gymnasium is the host for KU Recreation Services’ open gym hours on the basketball and racquetball courts as well as swimming pool recreation hours.

For over 70 years Student Union Activities, better known as SUA, has provided
recreational, educational and cultural activities for the KU community. SUA
is made up of student volunteers who plan, produce and promote concerts,
lectures, movies, trips, tournaments, traditional events and gallery exhibitions.
